MAGEE'S CREEK

Magee's Creek is an excellent paddling stream that flows from near Sartinville community just south of Highway 44 in Walthall County, MS and flows into the Bogue Chitto River Southwest of Tylertown, MS, north of Dillons Bridge Rd.  Magee's Creek as well as the Bogue Chitto River fall within the Pearl River watershed. Magee's Creek is a fairly shallow, clear running stream with some soapstone shoals and minor rapids. It runs through a fairly rural part of South Mississippi, except for a brief run through the small town of Tylertown.  There are a number of creeks in Mississippi with the same name, but this is the one you want to paddle.

TWO LANDINGS - ONE TRIP

E. LEXI RD. TO DILLONS BRIDGE RD.

The section of Magee's Creek from E. Lexi Rd. to Dillons Bridge Rd. is the only section we have paddled as of the writing of this summary.  Whether it was because of a recent dry spell or otherwise, it was absolutely the clearest stream we have paddled in South Mississippi.  We put in at the public boat ramp on E. Lexi Rd. which has a gravel parking ramp and a good concrete boat ramp. We found a great swimming hole complete with a rope swing off of a high low bank of the river.  Along the way, we found several areas with soapstone shoals that were perfect for swimming and playing.

On this trip, I was fortunate to bring a light fishing rod with a small spinner bait to try my luck fishing along the way.  The water was so clear, I could watch the small bass and bream chase the lure all the way to the boat.  I was able to catch and release a couple.

The creek ultimately emptied into the Bogue Chitto River (a great paddling stream in its own right) which we paddled a short distance to our take out at the Sweetwater Canoe and Trail Outpost.  Unfortunately, we were unable to find a convenient public take out, but Sweetwater was happy to allow us to take out at their landing for a small fee.  Altogether, this was approximately a 6 mile run.

This section of Magee's Creek was one of the most beautiful stretches of river we have been on.  It's worth the effort.  Here are a few examples of what we saw.
