For over a year now, Karma has been wanting to kayak out of Biloxi, MS to Deer Island to experience a little bit of ocean kayaking and to explore the island for future picnics or camping trips.  But we got so busy we thought we lost our window of warm weather.  But Mississippi's climate being what it is, we got perfect weather at just the right time, so we went.  Judging from several blogs we read, we thought the paddle might be more difficult than it was.  If you put in at the Biloxi Small Craft Harbor, it is literally a 5 minute paddle to the island.  But once you get to the island, you can paddle a long long way along the shoreline.

The paddle from the mainland to the island is very protected by the island and an artificial jetty.  The most dangerous thing about the trip is crossing the channel that is pretty busy with larger boat traffic.  When we went, we happened to pick the week of the great "Cruis'in the Coast" event.  We also got a birdseye view of a boat parade between Deer Island and the mainland.  Cap the trip off with seafood dinner at McElroy's and you have a perfect getaway.  Pictures and videos below.
